• Making friends is hard and people get pets to keep them company and fulfil their emotional needs.
• (Are pets captive friends?)
• But these pets impose restrictions that may reduce the ability to meet new people. Dogs need to be walked a lot. This causes the person to spend more time and be more dependent on their pet – a local maximum that is hard to break out of.
