Intimacy Is Continuous Not Discreet

  • If we think of a lamp as being off or on, that’s discreet. Continuous means that it can be in different stages of light, a dimmer, if you will.
  • We limit our understanding of intimacy if we only view it as a discreet action, like how we define a ‘sex scene’ in a movie. There can be so much more intensity the way two people look at each other in the eyes than actual intercourse sometimes.
  • We also limit our appreciation of all the various stages of arousal if we only view something as intimate if it is sexual. Just because sex did not occur doesn’t mean what happened wasn’t meaningful.
  • My friend described it like being in nature. Sometimes you want to hang around the edge of a forest and other times you want to go deeper and maybe bathe in the lake at the center of it. All of it is wonderful and you are not ‘in or out’ or ‘off or on’ it’s all about degrees of interaction.
