The Dangers Of Adopted Wealth In Coupledom

  • It is rare that both parties in a relationship have the same amount of wealth, usually the man (in a straight relationship) earns more or comes from greater amounts of money.
  • This disparity can be ignored somewhat if the couple shares the same lifestyle i.e. they live in the same place, go on holidays together but if what they do is beyond the means of the less well off person then that person’s lifestyle is effectively being subsidised by the other.
  • Knowing that their standard of living is beholden to whim of someone else can cause an anxiety in the less well off person. This person can attempt to soothe their anxiety by attempting to control their partner.
  • The less well off person who has bought into this dynamic understands that the continuation of their lifestyle depends not on their ability to earn their own money but on their ability to ensure that their partner stays with them.
  • However even the most subjugated person will understand that they are constricted and will initiate rebellions even as small as refusing to do the dishes. This may result in an escalation of control which will cause even more covert forms of rebellion, cheating being a common example.
